Advantages of Each COVID-19 Testing Option: Molecular, Antigen, and Antibody

The onset of COVID-19 brought with it a demand for various testing options to help the population stay informed and protect vulnerable individuals. Today, we have three main types of tests including the molecular, antigen, and antibody COVID-19 tests. The question is, which COVID-19 test should you take?

Three COVID-19 Testing Options and Their Advantages

Antibody COVID-19 testing

Antibody COVID-19 testing is a process by which a blood sample is collected and tested for antibodies that indicate a recovered case of COVID-19. Those who were affected by the virus up to three months prior can gain valuable insight from this test. Antibody testing has revealed thousands of cases of COVID-19, which did not present any symptoms at the time of infection. Those who test positive for COVID-19 antibodies in the blood can also enjoy peace of mind, knowing that they are temporarily protected against the virus.

Molecular COVID-19 testing

Molecular COVID-19 tests are administered by a healthcare professional who takes a swab from either just inside the nose, or both the nose and throat. This type of test provides the most accurate results indicating a current COVID-19 infection, with approximately a 1–2-day turnaround time. Due to its high level of accuracy, a negative molecular test is in most cases, valid for travel or admittance into certain facilities that require proof of COVID-19 testing or vaccination. Results indicate whether the individual is currently infectious, or if they are in the recovery process.

Antigen COVID-19 testing

The antigen test is done by taking a sample from inside the nose. Test results may be available in as little as 15 minutes, making this an excellent option for symptomless individuals who need fast reassurance that they are not currently affected by the virus. Antigen tests are generally the least expensive tests to administer, making them a great addition to the overall effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.
