Types of Available Blood Tests

Blood tests are a common procedure that enables doctors to check for specific diseases and conditions. These blood tests also make it possible to check the functions of different organs, and they can even help determine how well your treatments are working. Learning about all of the different types of blood tests is important before you visit a clinic.

Here is an overview of the different blood tests.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

The complete blood count test is often done during routine checkups at clinics. A CBC test measures different aspects of your blood, such as white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. Abnormal levels of white blood cells can often be a sign of infection. On the other hand, red blood cell levels that are too high or low can be signs of anemia, dehydration, or bleeding.

Blood Chemistry Tests/Basic Metabolic Panel

Basic metabolic panel (BMP) is several tests that measure chemicals within the blood. Many times these tests are focused on the plasma. The results of these tests give doctors more information about your organs, whether it’s your heart, liver, or kidneys

Blood Clotting Tests

A blood clotting test checks the proteins in your blood that can impact blood clots. Abnormal levels are a sign that you are at risk of developing clots within your blood vessels. These tests help monitor people that take medication to lower the chance of blood clots, such as Heparin or Warfarin.

Bone Marrow Tests

Bone marrow tests will check your bone marrow to ensure it’s making the correct amount of blood cells. An aspiration test will collect a small amount of bone marrow through a needle, while a biopsy test will collect bone marrow tissue during the same process. Bone marrow tests are important for checking the treatments for specific types of cancers.
